The Eucharist

(For preparation: read John 6, then Matthew 26:26-29)

Enter into the scene: The supper was over when Jesus stood up. The apostles saw Him take up a loaf of flat, round, unleavened bread. They watched. Jesus place the palm of His hand a few inches over the bread and His dark eyes turned upward. The whispered words of a blessing came from His barely parted lips. In the silence, He gave thanks and broke the bread into fragments and passed it among them, giving to each of the eleven a morsel. "This is my Body," He said, "which is about to be given for your sake. Take and eat." Jesus then picked up a big metal chalice on the table. It was filled with wine. Jesus again lifted up His eyes and murmured a second blessing. Then He gave thanks and passed behind each of them, handing them the cup and saying, "Drink all of this. For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many for the remission of sins."
